Good Progress Made Annual Meeting Held The annual meeting of the Timaru branch of the W.C.T.U. was held at the Sailors’ Rest. Superintendents’ reports of the various departments, showed that good progress had been made. During the year several special meetings for prayer and Intercession had been held. In the good citizenship department members had taken an active interest in public questions relating to the W.C.TU., and the welfare of women and children. A vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to all who had assisted during the year, and to the newspapers for reports of meetings. Annual Report The annual report expressed thanks to all who had helped financially and materially with the entertainment of visiting seamen during the year. As the Empire was still at war, the arrival of shipping was spasmodic and uncertain, but Mr and Mrs Woodward continued in their efficient manner, to meet all needs as they arose. Social evenings had been arranged at short notice, and gifts and comforts were always available for the men. A special feature was made of the Christmas party. Seamen in hospital had been visited by Mr and Mrs Woodward, and later, had had a home at the Rest, while waiting for their boats. The W.C.T.U. was pleased to note that several new subscribers, some anonymous, had shown their Interest in the work of the mercantile marine, and to them thanks were extended, also to the business firms and friends vho contributed annually to the funds, to all who sent in reading material, to the newspapers, and to Mr A. C. Martin, honorary auditor. Thanks were also extended to Mr and Mrs Woodward, who had declined to receive any salary for the duration of the war. Mrs Norrie, New Zealand Superintendent for wont among seamen, had received large parcels of comforts and money donations from branches of the W.C.T.U. throughout the Dominion. The report added that recently, a Welcome 'Club for the use and entertainment of soldiers, sailors and airmen was opened in the town, and the Sailors’ Rest was no longer needed for this purpose. The W.C.T.U. was very pleased to be of assistance and had received, on behalf of the citizens of Timaru, the grateful thanks of the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs W. G. Twee.' r y. Turnbull and Co., Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, R. Wilson and Co., John Edmond, Ltd., Westport Coal Co., Linton Coal Co., Patriotic Society, Mr G. T. Dawson, Mr and Mrs Woodward, "D. M.”, Mrs Bayliss (Tinwald), Miss Kirk (Wellington) , Mr W. Norrie (Christchurch), Mrs Rich (Cave), Mrs Prattley (Orari), Miss Davies (Woodbury), Glenitl Women’s Institute, Woodbury Women’s Institute, and from the Dunedin, Tinwald, Tauranga, Walmate, Motueka, St. Albans, Masterton, Ashburton, Opotlki, Green Island, Dunedin Central, Te Awamutu, Woolston, Karori, Napier, and Timaru branches of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Officers Elected The following officers were elected: President, Miss W. Fyfe; secretary, Mrs G. Keen; treasurer, Mrs Thomson; Sailors’ Rest treasurer, Mrs M. Mlnifie.
