MAYOR REBUKED
Waimate Remark Deprecated Protest At Chamber Of Commerce “I deprecate the remarks of the Mayor of Waimate, Mr W. F. Boland, regarding our letter suggesting* that the Waimate Borough Council should join the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce,” said Mr J. M. Jenkins at the meeting of the Chamber last night. “ ‘lt has nothing to do with us; there is no purpose in belonging to it,’ Mr Boland was reported to have said at the Borough Council meeting on October 20,” added Mr Jenkins. The subject arose when the Chamber’s Publicity and Progress Committee reported that the Waimate Borough Council had set up a committee to investigate the possibilities of the establishment of industries in Waimate. The Progress Committee had offered to co-operate with the Borough Council in its endeavours. “Our action calls for reciprocation on their part, and not for disparaging remarks,” said Mr Jenkins. “I would say that Waimate can hardly expect full co-operation from us, if they are not going to co-operate with us.” Mr G. H. Andrews: It was only the opinion of one man. Mr Jenkins: It came from the mayoral chair. It was made publicly and I am replying publicly. Mr Andrews: We feel that the Chamber of Commerce will support the establishment of any industry.
