TEMUKA REPORT ON WATER SUPPLY

Councillors To Make Inspection Subsidy On Scheme 13 To Be Reviewed The report on the borough water supply was received from a consulting engineer at a meeting of the Borough Council last evening, and it was agreed to examine sections of the line now opened and await a full report from the engineer. The consulting engineer (Mr H. G. Boyds), reported that the concrete pipes had been designed for a 401 b working pressure. It would therefore not be wise to increase the pressure except for the upper half of that stretch of line. In regard to the intake, an examination revealed that there was only Ift 6in fall In the 1750 ft from the present intake to the end of the pit, where the stand-by pump was installed. Relaying the pipe at the present level would be a costly job. He suggested that if water were available at the lower pit it might pay handsomely to abandon the present intake and build a new intake beside the pump. The pipe from the disconnected length should be worth about £3OO. This was not a definite recommendation, stated the engineer, but a suggestion worthy of examination. It would be prudent to bore a test hole In the lower pit, and test the flow over a period of some hours. Allowing for future growth, 350 gallons a minute for six hours on end should give ample for peak demand. The borough foreman (Mr T. Devine) reported that the Waihi water supply had been turned on to Temuka and the Winchester pipe line was left under the full weight of the Orari supply to enable an accurate examination of the line to be made. Sections were uncovered and revealed many minor leaks. Cr. P. Lynch: When the water supply failed recently, it was evident that pumping was necessary to give a fool proof supply. I believe that a reservoir should be constructed and all water pumped. Cr. J. M. A. Ritchie: A good water supply is absolutely essential, but it seems that the time is not opportune for the spending of the large sum which would be necessary to effect the repairs. The Mayor (Mr W. H. McMillan): What reply can we make to the engineer? Since it is merely a progress report perhaps we should examine the uncovered sections of the line, and await the final report from the engineer. The foreman: The water supply has failed once in about six years. From observations, the water level at the present intake and at the pit where the pump is situated, correspond to each other. To make the intake at the lower pit it would be necessary to lower the present line to suit the new intake.

It was agreed by the Council to inspect the open sections of the line, and await the full report from the engineer. Scheme 13 Subsidy A letter was received from the Social Security Department stating that the subsidy for Scheme 13 labour would be reviewed after December 6. The borough foreman said that seasonal work was intermittent, and there was need for provision for the men during the off periods. Not every Scheme 13 worker was fit for harvest work, and if the subsidy were withdrawn, it would be a hardship on many families in the district. In the last two years, every able-bodied man had been released to the farmers, and would be again available if the subsidy were continued. Cr. P. Lynch: We should reply to the Department on the lines of the foreman’s remarks, and point out that the Farmers’ Union passed a vote of thanks to the council for its co-operation in making labour available for harvesting last season. This was agreed to. In accordance with notice given Cr. J. Bums moved to rescind the motion appointing the whole council the Works Committee, and substituting that the Works Committee should comprise four councillors. In seconding the motion Cr. Lynch, said that big committees were unwieldy. A smaller Works Committee would be better informed and would effect better co-operation with the foreman. The Mayor said that if every councillor attended the meetings of the committee they could become conversant with the work and so add to their efficiency as councillors. The motion was defeated. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs Russell, was passed. BULL INJURES FARMER While releasing a bull on his farm on Tuesday, Mr C. R. Comer, a farmer of Milford, was knocked over by the animal and suffered severe contusions of the back and leg. It is thought that the bull knocked Mr Comer over accidentally, but then became excited. It was only Mr Comer’s presence of mind in grabbing the ring in the animal’s nose, that saved him from further injury. He whistled on the dog which distracted the bull while Mr Comer gamed a place of safety. place of safety. He was attended by Dr. F. A. Scannell.
