EXECUTION BY GUILLOTINE

The scaffold and blade which was set up in Paris recently for political executions has gone by several other names than that of the French physician who brought about its use in the French Revolution, states “The New York Times.” In fact, it goes much farther back than that time. It was used as early as the thirteenth century in Italy under the name of Mannaia. It was in general use in Germany in the Middle Ages and was variously known as the Dieie, the Hobel and the Dolabra. It was used in Scotland as early as 1581 and as late as 1685. In one small area of England it was called a gibbet. Dr. Joseph Guillotin, a member of the French Constituent Assembly, in 1789 proposed its use on humanitarian grounds and also on the ground of equal rights—formerly it had been used chiefly for nobles.
