The only totalisator fixtures in the Dominion this week are the Southland Racing Club and the Waikato Trotting Club meetings, both on Saturday, and the Levin Racing Club's meeting on Thursday and Saturday. The Timaru Trotting Club will give £2250 in stakes at its January meeting, compared with £2OOO last year. The three principal events will be worth £4OO each. • • • • Rebel Mate made only one appearance at the Cup meeting, but there was nothing amiss with him. The ground was too hard to suit him. Now nine years old and in the veteran stage, he has rarely looked better. • « 4 ♦ The Waikato M.P., Mr W. S. Goosman, who gained his first success as an owner at Te Rapa, with Laughing Fox, after having to wait a long time for it, made it two on end when Glen Connell won decisively in the Waimai Hurdles at double figures. ■The first major work to be undertaken by the Timaru Racecourse Trustees since they assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the Washdyke course will be the erection of a rest room for women. The necessity for this has been recognised for some time. When Skipton won the Melbourne Cup he broke a run of failures in the race by Victoria Derby winners. In turn, Theo, Feldspar, Talking, Hua, Nuffield, Reading and Lucrative had missed a place in the Cup after winning the classic. • » • • It is understood that overtures were made to secure the appearance of Certjsslmus at Auckland during the holidays, but the classes at Epsom would not suit the Point trotter. Certissimus is to race at Forbury next week and then may be reserved for the Timaru meeting. » • • • R. C. Stanton (trainer of the steeplechaser Chpery Jack), who was disqualified tor two years for alleged negligence ip the care of the horse when it was doped on the eve of the Grand National Steeplechase, has been unsuccessful in an application to the V.R.C. to have the case reopened. Stanton’s representative stated that he was considering the question of taking other steps, though what other steps can be taken was not MipateSyqF a Iqpg t|me Haughty Winner was a 101 b better horse at Trenttiam than at Riccarton, but he evened things up at the Cup meeting by registering a win aii<J two seconds in three starts. It is doubtful if the chestnut ever ran a better pace anywhere than he did in the Creasy Handicap on Saturday, when he was runner-up to Treasurer when giving away a stone and a half. When Treasurer won the Winter Cup he received only 171 b. • • • • As was to be expected, the win of Gladynev in tfie Wellington Handicap inspired some Australian critics to decry New Zealand handicap form. Gladynev’s second in the Cup with 8.13 and hi? win in the Metropolitan with JL6 will give them another opportunity. It is unlikely that Australian handicappers Will be influenced, and if Gladynev is entered for the Sydney pup he will receive well over 9.0. It will be Interesting to note how he is rated with Beau Vite to the Auckland Cup. 4 « « • Some good hacks were seen at the Cup meeting. The best, of course, was Battle Dress, who followed up his Spring Plate success with a Derby victory. Eulogist won the Criterion Handicap, and finished third in the Members with 7.12, conceding weight to Wild Fox. who accounted for the Jockey Club Handicap. Military Maid finished third in the Dressy with 101 b above the minimum, and it is a long time since horses eligible for hack races have done so well in the open class at a Metropolitan meeting. The Joker won in his own class with 9.1, and The Champ finished third with 9.4. All the horses named except The Champ lost their hack status at the fixture.
Wardress and Dominate at Riccarton added to the remarkable record of the Jewish Maid family. Messrs G. G. Stead and J. F. Buchanan were jointly responsible for the introduction of this blood to the Dominion. Mr Stead imported Otterden, in foal to Martagon, who produced Martian. Later Mr Buchanan- purchased in England the two-year-old filly Hebrew Maid (OrionJewish Maid). Before she was shipped to New Zealand Jewish Maid was mated with Melton, and after her arrival she produced a filly who was named Lovelorn. It was from fillies resulting from the union of Martian and Lovelorn that Menelaus, Motere, Peter Jackson, Gaine Carrington, Wotan, Beau Vite, Old Bill, Skipton and all the' other winners have descended.
"If the Railway Handicap were run immediately, Llandafl would be a strong favourite," says a northern writer. An analysis of Llandafl’s form on the two days at Ellerslie reveals the chestnut’s Railway claims in a strong light. He gave a striking exhibition of speed in winning the Electric Handicap, and, with added poundage treated the sprinters in the Telegraph Handicap in cavalier fashion. What impressed Llandafl’s backers was the way he ran his races out. On Monday, when he carried 7.12, he beat the dual Railway winner, Bronwen, by two lengths and a half. But for interference at the start, where he was momentarily thrown out of his stride, Llandafl’s win would have been twice that margin. Llandafl accumulates great speed out of the barrier, and if he were to draw close in in the Railway he would set all rivals a hard task. A five-year-old, Llandafl has been sparingly raced, but he has the remarkably good record of five wins and a second in ten starts. Llandafl has not raced often, but he has neen accepted for, without starting, more often than he has run.
