STRONG FORCES AT OSLO
State Of Emergency Declared By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Rec. 6.30). LONDON, Sept. 10. The Stockholm correspondent of the British United Press reports that strong German troop concentrations are established around Oslo.
The Stavanger radio stated that the Nazi Governor of Norway ‘ Herr ”-r--boven) has declared a state of emergency in Oslo. Strikes are now forbidden. Norwegians are obliged to remain indoors between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.; transport, except railways, must close down at 7 pan.; and the sale of alcoholic liquors, cinemas, theatres, dances and public gatherings are banned.
It is stated that opposition to the decree will be broken by force. Inhabitants of Spitsbergen, who -®re brought to Britain after their landing, are settling down in their temporary homes. Their general attitude is summed up in the remarks of the young wife of a mine foreman, who said: “It was a terrible wrench to leave our homes, but if it means the defeat of Hitler, we are glad to make sacrifices.”
Many of the men are now seeking employment to help the war effort. Few of them had ever be- . away from their homes before, and the whole incident is something in the nature of an adventure.
It is reported that two of six Trades Union leaders charged with plotting a general strike have been shot, one sentenced to imprisonment for life, two sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, and one to 40 years’ imprisonment. One of those executed was Viggo Hansteen, legal adviser and member of the executive of the Norwegian Trades Union Council. Steel-helmeted police have been patrolling the streets of Oslo since the declaration of a state of emergency. German and Norwegian prisoners are sent to Germany weekly. The Germans have warned Norwegians against harbouring German deserters.
