LIFE AT TOBRUK
Axis Using Second Rate Airmen LONDON, September 10. Reuter’s correspondent at Tobruk, in a special dispatch, describes life in the town. About half of the force in Tobruk are Australians, he states, most of them being infantry. The gunners and tank crews are mostly from the United Kingdom. It is revealed that the Axis has been using second-rate airmen for its raids on Tobruk. One young pilot who was shot down, disclosed that he had completed his training in Germany only on August 5. He came to grief on his first operation flight. Italian guns are still being used against their former owners, and the Italians left such immense stocks of ammunition that there is no fear of a shortage. x
Confirmation exercises are being held by a padre who won the M.C. at Dunkirk. When the exercises are concluded a bishop is to visit Tobruk to hold a mass confirmation service.
