TENNIS SQUABBLE

THREAT OF DISAFFILIATION (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 10. The executive of the United Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club has decided to cease the club's affiliation with the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, and to reconsider affiliation later only on terms “mutually satisfactory to the club and the association.” This action has been taken against the express wish of the tennis section of the club, a meeting of members of which, at the end of last season, rejected by a substantial majority, the proposal to cancel affiliation. The executive of the club is at variance with the tennis committee which met this evening and decided to oppose the executive’s decision. The affiliation of the United Club, which has for many years been the most influential and one of the largest tennis clubs in Christchurch, was the subject of several meetings last season, when the executive made a number of “demands” on the association under threat of disaffiliation. Disaffiliation will involve the disqualification of all members, unless they are affiliated through membership of other clubs, from playing in competitions, the New Zealand Championships, Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket matches and other matches under the control of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. As the club last year supplied the entire personnel of the province’s representative men’s and women’s teams, the proposal is fraught with serious consequences both for the players and for the association. It will therefore occasion much discussion both at meetings of the club and the association.
