Alterations To Office

Decision To Proceed A decision to proceed immsdlately with alterations to the borough office, in addition to the construction of a new meeting room, the cost of both jobs and furnishings not to exceed £250 in all, was made at a meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council on Wednesday evening. It was stated that through an exceptional set of circumstances an asset which would have cost more than £lOOO normally was being created for an expenditure of £250.

Crs. A. J. Bell and Z. O. Sherratt spoke against proceeding with further improvements to the office until the new meeting room had been completed. They claimed that the works committee had been called upon to cut down its estimates and now the finance committee was using the money for the Council chambers. The motion to proceed with the completion of the job was moved by Cr. H. W. Williamson and seconded by the Mayor. After discussion the resolution was carried by five votes to two. Finance A steady improvement in borough finance was reported on by Cr. Williamson. There was a debit balance of £499/13/11 in the general account compared with a debit of £512/0/1 at the corresponding date last year. £1350/19/3 in 1939 and £1398/3/9 in 1938.

The finance committee was empowered to continue inquiries about a relieving town clerk for the period of Mr Kirby’s absence on military service.

The tender of Miss E. M. Hodson at £2 per annum for a borough reserve was accepted. A copy of the judgment dealing with compensation ~ioney received . for properties purchased for the State Housing Department was received. The Council agreed to Plunket Rooms being placed in the Small Park near the Women’s Rest Room pending completion of the proposed Centennial Memorial, and it was agreed to seek the permission of the Crown Lands Department for permission to lease this site at a peppercorn rental. A letter was received from the Medical Officer of Health (Dr Telford) reporting on a recent analysis of the water supply. It was agreed to advise him that the recent flood had affected the water supply and that arrangements had been made to clean the reservoir. Further tests were being carried out with the auxiliary pump, Cr. Z. O. Sherratt (water ccuimlttee chairman) reported. A decision would be made about the purchase of the pump soon. It was left to the chairman to confer with Mr C. W. McKenzie regarding the possible sealing of footpaths In Peel and Pine streets. Advice was received from the State Housing Department that three more units would be proceeded with almost immediately. BASKETBALL The draw for the basketball tournament in aid of patriotic funds tomorrow is as follows: Senior: High School A v. Winchester A, Convent Old Girls (Ashburton) v. Woodbury, Waihi v. Winchester B. Woodbury .v. Hockey, Peel Forest a bye. Junior B: High School C v. Rangitata, High School D v. Geraldine Old Girls, Orari Bridge a bye. Primary School section: Pleasant Valley v. Geraldine A, Geraldine B v. Woodbury. HOCKEY The following will represent Geraldine against Thistle (Ashburton) at Geraldine to-morrow: M. Broad, C. Pierce, G. Moulton, J. Sullivan. S. Brown, J. Buckley, L. Richarris, V. Prouting, K. Wallach, L. Grant. N. Titheridge. Umpire, Mr A. Goodman. FOOTBALL The following will represent Geraldine against Old Bovs to-morrow:— T. Turner, W. Kerr, kettle (2), Fawdray (2), F. Kettle, H. Hobbs, G. Metcalf, R. Gibson, W. Angland, Leary (2), D. Pierce, L. Neutze, P. Brenton, T. Timblick, A. Ford, W. Patrick, J. Eathorne. PERSONAL Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs G. H. Stonyer, Raukapuka, Geraldine, that their son. Trooper V. W. Stonyer, is a prisoner of war in Carinthia.
