PLEASURE TRIPS DEPRECATED

Rental Cars And Petrol Economy

Question Referred To Oil Fuel Controller

The question of the use of petrol by rental cars was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Timaru-St. Andrews Branch of the Farmers’ Union, when the secretary, Mr A. B. Struthers, was Instructed to bring the subject under the notice of the Oil Fuel Controller.

The matter was brought up by Mr D. M. France, who said that in many cases rental cars were being used for pleasure purposes. During the war it was necessary to curtail as much as possible the use of cars for pleasure purposes only, and he considered that before these cars were made available the hirer should make a declaration that they were being used for business purposes. The Wheat Controller wrote stating that the question of the storage of wheat away from the waterfront would be considered at the next meeting of the Wheat Board, and thanking the executive for its offer of assistance. The Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union, Mr W. W. Mulholland, advised that compressed salt licks could be obtained from Australia and that endeavours were being made to obtain supplies of rock salt from Britain and elsewhere.

In connection with the negotiations to obtain a bus service from Fairlie, via Cannington, Maungatl and Otipua, Mr T. H. Roberts reported that the alternative route over the Cave Hill had been approved provisionally until the bridges and road above Cannington had been attended to. The Mackenzie County Council had been approached and a definite assurance had been obtained from the Road Transport Authority that the service would be inaugurated. It was agreed that the committee set up from the Farmers’ Union and the Cannington Young Farmers’ Club should consider the proposed route in detail, and it was left to the secretary to arrange ' a meeting between- the Committee and the officials of the Railways Road Service. Mr C. G. Bruce raised the question of a bus route through Middle Valley, and he undertook to make a survey of the district and report to the next meeting of the Branch.
