SHIELD TOURNEY
Suggestion To Rugby
Union
Stimulating Interest
The suggestion that the institution of a shield competition between the South Canterbury, Ashburton and North Otago Rugby Unions on the lines of the Seddon Shield Competition on the West Coast would stimulate interest In the game in the district was made by the chairman (Mr S. H. Sullivan) at a meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The suggestion was well received by the meeting, and the chairman and secretary were deputed to draw up a letter placing the proposal before the other Unions. Producing a programme of the West Coast-Nelson match recently played at Greymouth, Mr Sullivan referred to a paragraph which stated that since West Coast held the Seddon Sheild in 1933 the total gates for four matches reached £B3l, the record gate being £303 In a match against Buller. “I was wondering if we could do something on the same lines at the end of the season,” said Mr Sullivan. "We could ■have a shield for competition between South Canterbury, Ashburton and North Otago. Their gates are small, the same as ours.”
Mr A. Mitchell: It is wonderful the difference a shield makes. The chairman: It would double our gates. Mr D. J. Hewitt remarked that on the West Coast the public took football as seriously as in Southland.
The chairman: I think a shield would increase the Interest in the game here. It could not lessen it. Mr Hewitt suggested that the Union should approach the other two Unions. Mr J. Davey: I am sure they will be only too willing to join in. The chairman and secretary were appointed to draft a letter for consideration at the next meeting. Harris Cup Competition
Arrangements for the representative match to be played on September 20 at Christchurch against Canterbury were advanced.
The secretary (Mr R. O. Ball) reported that the balance in the general account was £97/7/4 and in the insurance account, £l6/16/6.
The draw for Saturday resulted: Old Boys v. Geraldine, at Geraldine, 2.45; Zingari v. Southern, at Waimate, 2.45; Celtic v. Temuka, at Fraser Park No. 1, 2.45; Makikihi v. Star, at Fraser Park No. 2, 2.45. Harris Cup
