ATTACK ON TOBRUK
Easily Beaten Off RUGBY, July 31. “During yesterday afternoon the enemy attacked one of qur forward observation points at the junction of the perimeter, south-east of Tobruk,” states a communique from British Headquarters in Cairo. “They were driven off by artillery fire and left one wounded man in our hands. During the night our patrolling activity continued, but no contact was made with the enemy. ~ “In the frontier area an Italian fighter made a forced landing and the pilot surrendered. “Vichy forces in Syria have now handed over all field artillery and fixed guns to the Allied troops.” The Turkish Government has informed the Vichy Ambassador to Ankara, that French ships, now in Turkish harbours will not be released until the end of the war. The vessels are mostly armed merchantmen, which sought refuge just before the armistice was signed.
