What Readers Think Letters to the Editor
WAITEMATA BY-ELECTION Sir,—Mr O. J. F McKee’s "Searchlight of Criticism.” as interpreted by his vapourings, is decidedly out of focus. Mr McKee inadvertently plays into the hands of the Labour Government and damages the cause he endeavours to represent. He is, though, a typical Lee party exponent. His “Billingsgate” reference runs parallel with the alleged statements and writings of his champion. He desires to give further publicity to the downfall of the Lee-Barnard candidate in the Waltemata by-election. Political diplomacy suggests that he would not further pursue this subject. As everyone is aware the Democratic Labour candidate, after a flourish of party trumpets, concluded the contest by forfeiting his deposit. Mr McKee wishes to affirm that Messrs Lee and Barnard, by their continued adherence to the platform on which orthodox Labour was elected, ( justified their right to appeal for the support of the workers of New Zealand. Well, they appealed to the workers of Waitemata and were flatly turned down. Mr McKee apparently has not yet realised that out of 4997 Labour votes cast only 908 were in favour of the Lee candidate. It therefore follows that the workers of Waitemata do not think much of the philosophy O. J. F. McKee so clumsily advocates. Mr McKee Insists on his full measure of such terms as “political psychology,” “political insolence,” “elementary principles,” etc. A little nonsense now and then is appreciated, and by providing the amusement O. J. F. McKee serves a useful purpose. I am etc., R. W. ANDERSON. Timaru, July 29.
