URGENT NEEDS MUST BE MET

Recruiting For U.S. Navy (6.30 pm.) WASHINGTON, June 18. Colonel Frank Knox (Secretary of the I’r y) announced to-day that naval reserve Officers now serving in the merchant marine may be ordered on active duty without their consent. Naval recruiting officers have been instructed to recruit 15.000 men a month. Colonel Knox explained that the navy would not conflict wi’.:. the merchant marine unnecessarily but the navv’s u’-rent need must be met. Colonel Knox announced to lay that naval air bases at Bermuda and Newfoundland will be commissioned to the next few weeks.
