HARRIER NOTES

REVIEW OF NORRIE CUP RACE (By "Spike"). Fixtures for the season are:— June 28—Halswell race, Christchurch. July 19—Orr Walker Cup (South Canterbury Championship). July 26-Canterbury Championships at Timaru. Aug. 2—Waimate-Timaru Relay handicap teams’ race. Aug. 23—Temuka-Timaru road race. Sept. 6—Port Chalmers - Dunedin road race. An interesting feature of the Norrie Cup race was that seniors and juniors ran together. The running of the juniors was excellent, the first three to finish being within li minutes of Johns's time. P. Bradley, of the Boys’ High School, ran a meritorious race. This was his first appearance in any harrier event and he finished close behind Rankin and Drake. With a little encouragement and proper tuition the High School should be capable of producing a junior team better than anything In the Dominion. There is excellent material available among the boys. McWhirter, who has been handicapped by an injured knee, is a potential champion. With solid training he . should do well in the Canterbury championships. Canterbury Championships It is extremely gratifying to be able to announce that the Canterbury championships are this year to be held in Timaru. This will be a memorable occasion as this is the first time since harriers were instituted that the major event has been allocated to Timaru. A hearty welcome will be extended to all visiting athletes and they can be assured that the local harrier management committee will do all in its power to entertain the guests. Novelty Race The skating enthusiasts have issued a challenge to the Timaru Harrier Club for a race from Geraldine to Timaru, each team to comprise five members. As all proceeds are to be given for patriotic purposes the challenge has been accepted and arrangements are well in hand to stage this novelty in the near future. Saturday Club Runs Saturday club runs with the starting places are:—Timaru, Caroline Bav; Temuka, Mrs M. Spillane, Wilkin Street; Presbyterian, Mr England, Orbell Street; Anglican, Mr and Mis G. Burrell, Pages Road; Boys High School, School.
