TEARS FORGOTTEN
BABIES ADOPTED FOR ONE NIGHT Awakened by the explosion of bombs in a recent raid, 40 children patients in Cardiff Infirmary began to cry. They cried even louder when, directed by a nurse, they had to leave their warm beds to be evacuated from their damaged ward to another hospital. Bombs were still falling as the nurse shepherded hei small charges to a bus. The children, still crying lustily, were driven to the military hospital, the most convenient institution to which they could be taken. They were hurried to bed with hot drinks, but the disturbing of their sleep had thoroughly upset them and the weeping went on. Bedtime stories would not silence them. Jokes likewise failed. Then the despairing nurse had an idea. Going into an adjoining ward she asked: "Are there any fathers here?” Back came the cry in a chorus: “Yes.” “Well,” the nurse announced, “I want you to adopt a baby each for the night." The men agreed, and 40 whimpering children were brought in and tucked in alongside their temporary fosterfathers. In a few minutes all were fast asleep. Air Bases in Brazil The United States is negotiating with Brazil for the construction of air bases on the coast of Brazil for use in emergency. An official of the Brazilian Embassy in Washington revealed that the United States plans to lend Brazil £21,350,000 to construct the bases.
