TREES TAKEN FROM RESERVE Fines of £75 and £5O. with costs £3O, were imposed by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., on Gilbert Gunson Rowntree, who was charged in the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court by the Commissioner of Crown Lands with the removal of timber valued at £lBO from a scenic reserve at Arahiwi, near Mamaku, and with damaging the reserve to the extent of £2OO. Rowntree, who was renresented by Mr J. Dyson, will also be liable for the value of the timber. is a bare-faced taking of trees, the depredation of an area reserved to the public for all time,” said the Crown Prosecutor, Mr V. R. Meredith. He added that permission had been given for a strip of land to be cleared through the reserve to enable a power line to be erected. A contract had been let to a certain firm. Some time later an officer of the Lands and Survey Department had found widespread evidence of destruction in the reserve and the cutting of 35 trees. Mr Dyson said the defence would snow that all the timber had been bought by defendant from the contractors, against whom action would be taken. ______
