U.S. Defence Bonds Mr Henry Morgenthau (Secretary to the United States Treasury) announced that in the first 17 days the sale of new defence savings bonds netted 257,646,000 dollars. National Savings Campaign Lord Klndersley, president of the National Savings Movement said that £700,000,000 had been raised by national savings in the first 19 months of the war compared with £46,000,000 in the same period last war. Finnish Steamer Bombed Tire Finnish Foreign Ministry has announced that the Finnish vessel Josefina Thorden (6549 tons) has been bombed and set on fire in the North Atlantic. Seventeen of the crew of 32 have been rescued. Gift From Maoris Arrives Safely A gift of curios from Arawa Maoris to Lord Willingdon which it was feared was lost when the Matakana was wrecked in the West Indies arrived safely in Britain with little damage. Mr W. J. Jordan (New Zealand High Commissioner) presented them to Lord Willingdpn. Traffic From New York Tire New York Port Authority announced that export traffic from New York in 1940 was nearly 2,000,000,000 dollars, the largest since 1920, of which Europe took 1,021000.000 dollars worth, compared with 566,000,000 in 1939. Escape Prevented M- Andre Blumel, who was private secretary to M. Blum, was arrested when attempting to cross the French frontier into Spain. Price of Whisky From June 3 the price of whisky will be 17/6 a bottle and gin 17/- a bottle. Air Raid Damage It is revealed that the rooms of the Empire Parliamentary Association in Westminster Hall were destroyed in air raids on May 10. but some important books and records were saved.
