SOCIAL NOTES

Dr. and Mrs J. L. Mclver, Elizabeth Street, have returned from a visit to Dunedin. Miss Wright, Oamaru, is staying with Mrs A. Wigley, “Opuha Lodge,” Lysaght Street. Mrs Derrick Oould, who is staying with her mother, Mrs A. S. Elworthy, “Holme Station,” Pareora, will return to-day to Christchurch. Mrs Algar Williams, Christchurch, who is the guest of Mrs N. Hope, “The Grampians,” Mackenzie Country, will return home early next week. Mrs R. D. King, Sefton Street, who attended a meeting of the Dominion Council of Voluntary Aids in Wellington, has returned home. Mrs Downs, Wellington, who is the guest of Mrs A. P. Mac Duff, Christchurch, will later visit Tlmaru and Dunedin. Miss Anne Campbell, girl soprano, was successful at the Christchurch competitions. In the sections for which she entered, girls 16 and under 18, and the women’s operatic or dramatic solo, she was placed first and third respectively. Miss Campbell has also been engaged by Station 3A to broadcast a lyric soprano programme. Mrs W. Hawkeswort’.i (formerly Miss Roberta Jolliffe, of Wellington) is a night sister at a hospital in Surrey where a number of men who were evacuated from Dunkirk are still recovering from their wounds. She discovered that so much interest was taken in New Zealand that she gave a lecture to her patients, ending up with a haka, which she performed in the dark. Her sister, Mrs Jocelyn Weston, is in the Finance Department at New Zealand House. Members of the Pareora West Tennis Club and Ex-pupils’ Association held a surprise party at the home of Mr and Mrs W. H. Arden on Wednesday to do honour to Miss Esther Arden, whose marriage takes place today. The evening was spent in games, items and competitions. After supper Mr A. Hill, president of the Tennis Club, spoke of Miss Arden’s work for the club and wished her every happiness in her new life. Mr L. Jackson also spoke on behalf of the ex-pupils. Miss C. Whitefield then made the presentation of a bedroom clock, with all good wishes for the future. The guest of honour suitably replied.
