“TOBACCO ROAD”
Daring Film Experiment Mystery movie of the new year is "Tobacco Road,” Darryl Zanuck’s screen version of the daring sociological drama of life among the American South’s submerged tenth. Zanuck is following the policy of secrecy that brought him such good dividends both in publicity and money in the case of “The Grapes of Wrath.” The sets are closed, guards protect the location sites while vague hints are floating about that the studio fears trouble from the citizenry of Georgia whom the story attacks. “Tobacco Road” may be an even bolder experiment than “The Grapes of Wrath” which did have the name of Henry Fonda to draw the nonsociologically minded picture-goer into the cinema. This time Mr Zanuck is making no compromise with the boxoffice.
