ROVING PLAYER PROBLEM The Wellington Metropolitan Golf Association has decided to issue to affiliated clubs membership cards which would prevent a roving player belonging to no particular club playing on a course without contributing anything towards its upkeep except green fees. It was stated that a number of golfers are in the habit of representing themselves as members of clubs with which they have no connection, when visiting a strange course, and the introduction of the card system would enable a check to be made. It is hoped that this system will later spread over the whole of New Zealand. A compulsory standardised scheme of handicapping for New Zealand was envisaged by some delegates present, and the association decided to ask the Golf Council to submit to the next annual meeting of the New Zealand Association, a suggestion to this effect for consideration. The question of inter-club games during the war years was discussed, and the general opinion was that friendly games should go on where possible, although it was pointed out that difficulty was frequently experienced owing to the demands of Home Guard and E.P.S. duties on players. It was decided that delegates should consult their clubs on the matter, further arrangements to be made by the management committee. Johnston Cup at Final Stage Another stage of the Johnston Cup was completed last week-end at Gleniti when Miss B. McAuliffe and N. Gray beat Miss Scales and R. Parker. Miss McAliffe played a very steady game, especially In approaching, and this was a considerable factor in the victory. The final will now be played between Miss McAuliffe and N. Gray and Miss McBride and I. Wollerman. Good Scores in Stableford D. Menzies, playing at Gleniti last week-end, scored 27 points in the Stableford bogey competition. With his handicap of 8 Menzies won the event with a total of 35. The runner-up was F. Cross with 14-18-32. I. Wollerman has been playing good golf at Gleniti this season and has already had several successes. Tournaments Entries are now being received for the South Canterbury championship tournament to be held on May 31, June 1 and 2. The tournament is always popular and should attract the usual large entry. The Gleniti ladies’ tournament which is being held on June 2, comprises a medal round in the morning and a bogey foursome in the afternoon. The course is in excellent condition and present indications point to the entries being numerous. New Rule Explained Since the Introduction of the new rule at Gleniti regarding the fences, there seems to be some doubt as to the penalty. The position is that a player incurs loss of stroke and distance, if a ball goes over a fence, whether from the tees or from the fairways. Work on New Green The staff at Hlghfield is at present engaged in the excavation work for a new green at the fifth hole. It is to be laid down at the back of the present putting area and should be in keeping with the many improvements made to the course in recent years. Reduction in Handicaps Players continue to reduce each week at Highfield. The latest list is as follows: J. Baird 26 to 25, E. Cochrane 30 to 29, H. G. Naylor 19 to 18, O. L. Robertson 20 to 19, E. A. Scott 7 to 6, J. Skinner 30 to 27. North End Reductions With the course in good order further reductions were made in players’ handicaps at North End on Saturday. J. Campbell who has been playing consistent this season, again returned the best card. Reductions in handicaps were as follows: W. Reid from 14 to 12, J. Campbell from 17 to 15 and J. Gabites from 24 to 22.
