WAIMATE FIRE BRIGADES

Provincial Conference To Be Heid In Waimate This year the annual conference of the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades’ Association will be held in Waimate. It is almost 10 years since the conference was last held here. Twelve to 14 delegates are expected for the conference which is to open on May 31, when brigades at Hanmer. Ranglora, Ashburton, Geraldine, Temuka and other centres will be represented. No demonstration is being held like that In Victoria Park in 1926. Members of the Waimate Brigade, when the water supply has been improved, hope to be in a position to Invite the Canterbury Association to give its demonstration at Waimate. KDROW ITEMS The report presented to the annual meeting of the Kurow branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association disclosed the best financial year on record. Officers elected yere:—President, Mr A. Don (re-elected); vicepresident, Mr D. A. Small; secretary, Mr Shannon: auditor, Mr D. E. Neave; committee, Messrs A. H. Chapman, J. Crooks, L. Munro, J. Jackson, H. Stewart, D. Connor, A. Logan, J. Hill, W. McLean, E. Deans, with Messrs D. Anderson and Sherriss as associate members. At the last parade Of the Kurow unit of the Home Guard, there was a very fair muster and all guardsmen were provided with a rifle. To-morrow the unit will undertake its first route march, leaving the recreation ground at 2 pm. The Rev. H. Hook, M.A., vicar of Upper Waltaki. is leaving shortly to be vicar at Milton. Parishioners and friends gathered at the vicarage to show their appreciation of Mr Hook’s work during the last 12 months. For the parishioners in Kurow and district, Mr A. Robinson expressed thanks for Mr Hook’s magnificent work for the church and presented him with a gift from the parish. Mrs Sutherland, of Duntroon, spoke on behalf of the Duntroon parishioners, thanking Mr Hook and asking him to accept a gift. Kirk presided over a good attendance of members at the weekly discussion circle of the W.E.A. Lecture five, a paper written by Mr R. S. Barker, and entitled “Democracy In The Economic Order,” brought forth spirited discussions after each section had been read and the questions answered. Next Wednesday, the last paper of the series will be studied. On June 5, Rev. A. H. Acheson commences his first lecture on “Post-War Reconstruction,” and members of the general public are cordially Invited to attend. PRIMARY SCHOOL Two tennis courts, which will also be used for basketball, are being laid down on the Waimate Primary School grounds. The Waimate County Council Is supervising the work on behalf of the Public Works Department. EMERGENCY STRETCHERS The construction of 40 folding stretchers for emergency purposes has been practically completed in the Waimate County workshops The stretchers are included in the County Home Guard and Emergency Precautions Scheme. PERSONAL Mrs W. Green, Oamaru, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs J. Hicks, Queen Street, has returned home. Messrs G. S. Gapper and H. N. Wells, Government audit inspectors, left Waimate yesterday after carrying out the annual Inspection of borough and County Council books. Miss Nancy Turnbull and Mr D. Turnbull, Redcliff, left yesterday on a short visit to Auckland. Mrs E. A. Lee and Miss Jeanne Lee, of Christchurch, are the guests of Mr and Mrs F. H, Boys, George Street.
