PATRIOTIC FUND TO BENEFIT The Timaru Ladies’ Golf Club held their annual South Canterbury tournament last week in ideal conditions. There was a good field and the golf, played on a perfect course, was of a good standard. Credit is due to Mr R. L. Galloway the greenkeeper, for the excellent condition of the course. Championship honours went to Miss Jean Horwell, Miss Morrow, of Mayfield, being the runner-up. The Highfield trophy was won by Mrs Coxhead, runner-up Mrs Lawson. On the first morning of play the Kerr Cup teams’ match which drew an entry of six teams, was competed for, the Temuka Club being the winners. The concluding event of the tournament, the Wright Cup mixed foursome, was played on Saturday afternoon the successful contestants being Miss Morrow and Mr Horsell, runners-up Mr and Mrs A. M. Rdbertson. Donations to the prize fund and general fund were made by the .Misses Mcßride, Mesdames Kerr, Richards, O. L. Robertson, Mr and Mrs A. M. Robertson, Miss Horwell and Mr Cook. Thanks are due to these and members who gave their services to make the function a complete success. As a result the committee hope to be able to hand over to the Patriotic Fund, the sum of £l3/17/-. AROUND THE LINKS Third Win in Wright Cup When A. E. Horwell and Miss Morrow headed the field two up in the Wright Cup, which capped off the South Canterbury women’s championship at

Highfield, it was Horwell’s third win in the event and Miss Morrow’s second. Horwell and Mrs Horwell won the cup in 1931, and for the last two years Horwell and Miss Morrow have been successful.

Singles Knockout at Highfield The singles knockout at Highfield is providing the usugl interesting competition and some splendid games have been contested before players earned the right to go through to the second round. Miss Horwell’s Fine Record Miss Jean Horwell is still South Canterbury’s No. 1 woman golfer. She retained the district championship title last Week, but only after a stem struggle against Miss Betty Morrow, the Mid-Canterbury champion. Rated amongst the Dominion's best as her handicap of one indicates, Miss Horwell played solid golf, but so also did Miss Morrow who handicapped on 11 played above herself, to take the match to the 18th green. Miss Horwell first won the title in 1932 and held it without a break until 1937 when she was eliminated in the semi-final by Mrs N S. Hawkes who was beaten in the final by Mrs W. A. Scott. In 1938 the championships were abandoned because of tire Wet season, blit for the last three years Miss Horwell has remained unbeaten. It is an outstanding performance. North End Reductions Good cards were returned from Saturday’s medal round at North End. A. D. McLay scored a net 63 and reduced his handicap for the second time this season. Reductions in handicaps are as follows: A. D. McLay 20 to 18, H. Welford 24 to 23, G. Ward 24 to 23. Johnson Cup Miss Mcßride and I..Wolterman beat Miss Lister and H. Francis in the semi-

final of the Johnston Cup played at Gleniti last week-end. The game was closely contested, the consistent play of Miss Mcßride being a great help to the winners.

Knockouts at Gleniti In the first round of the fourball knockout competition at Gleniti W. Stafford and C. C. Leitch beat D. Menzies and N. Gray. In the singles knockout competitions at Gleniti McNab beat Falloon, Baltentyne beat Rigg, Wolterman beat Powell and Leitch beat Ward. Good Win for Pleasant Point Although meeting men on lower handicaps than its own representatives, the Pleasant Point Club defeated a Timaru team last week by nine matches to six. The first seven of the Timaru team of 10 were beaten in the singles and the win Was well deserved. In spite of reduced membership because of the war, the Pleasant Point Club is in good heart, and the links are a credit to the committee whose exchequer is limited by the smaller playing strength. Fence Removed

The fence at Brevity (No. 8 and 18) on the Gleniti course, has now been removed and there no out of bounds rule is applicable when playing this hole. The removal of this fence also heralds the introduction of the new out of bounds rule for the whole course Whereby players now lose stroke and distance when tee shots go over fences.
