Domestics Not Available “I could place 50 girls in an hour if I could get them,” said the proprietress of a labour bureau to a representative of “The Timaru Herald, 1 ’ yesterday when discussing the problem of domestic help. It was ascertained that there is a big demand for girls of the right type, not so much for the town as for the country. The defection of men from farms has thrown much r ore work on fanners’ wives, but they are unable to obtain any assistance for the homes. As much as £2 a week has been offered for girls, but they have not been obtainable. One of the causes of the present position is stated to be due to the demands by various factories for staffs. Whether it is the wages or the hours which constitute a better inducement is not known, but the fact remains that girls prefer the factories to domestic duties. _______
