FATAL NEGLIGENCE
Motorist Causes Death Of Woman (P A.) HAMILTON, May 14. Having been found guilty yesterday on a charge of negligent driving causing the death of Myra Minnie Cootes at Hillcrest on March 13, William Reid Douglas, a motion picture projectionist, aged 27, of Morrinsville, appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court to-day. Prisoner’s good record must be taken into account, said his Honour. The result of the young man's negligence was serious and normally speaking a term of imprisonment would be the proper penalty. Effect must be given to the strong recommendation for mercy which was made by the jury. Still the future must be taken inlo account and every precaution must be taken to prevent a repetition of the accident. Perhaps to a certain extent the accident was due to over-confidence by Douglas who had done a good deal of driving. Douglas was fined £25 and also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, the total to be paid in monthly Instalments of £5. His driving licence was cancelled for two years and he was ordered to take out a prohibition order for 12 months.
