Timaru And Waimate

Appeals Man-Power Committee The South Canterbury Man-Power Committee held a sitting at Waimate yesterday morning and at Timaru yesterday afternoon. Mr K. Mackenzie presided, and associated with him were Messrs A. J. Davey and H. Badham. The committee will sit at Fairlie this morning.

The majority of the reservists, who had been called in a Territorial ballot, appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. In the case of Thomas Bernard Reilly, farm worker, for whom Patrick Reilly appealed, the appeal on the grounds of hardship was dismissed and that on the grounds of public interest was adjourned till June 15. Walter Gow, storeman, Public Works Department, Temuka (Mr A. D. McRae) appealed on the grounds of undue hardship to his invalid mother, ne being her sole support. The appeal was adjourned till August 1. In the case of Edmond Arthur Bloxham, Levels (Mr W. A. Scott), a trimmer employed by the New Zealand Refrigerating Co., Ltd., who appealed on the grounds of hardship to himself and to his dependants, the appeal was adjourned sine die. The committee reserved its decision on an appeal by William Nelson, farmer, Cave (Mr M. C. Gresson). Waimate Cases The appeal of James Ernest Shaw, horse trainer (Mr S. I. Fitch) was supported by Mr John Mitchell (Studnolme) on the grounds of undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed conditional on the reservist not being called into camp before October 1. G. F. Lane, farmer, Waihaorunga, appealed on behalf of Brian Flavington Mercer, farm hand. The appeal on the grounds of hardship was dismis ed, as was that concerning public interest. provided the reservist serves in camp during June, July and August next. George Arthur Lane, farmer, Hook (Mr W. Boland) appealed for Arthur John Lane, farm employee, aged 20. Decision was reserved pending the reservist being called up for overseas service. The appeal of William Richards, farmer, Hook, was dismissed, conditional on his serving in camp during June, July and August. Arthur Logan Kearton, of Arno, a student at the Waimate High School, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed conditional on the reservist not being called up before December 31. The appeal of Douglas Ponsonby, farm employee, which was supported iy D. J. Ponsonby, Waimate, was disTnissed conditional on the reservist serving in camp during June, July and August or during July, August and September. To Join Home Guard Mrs Nellie Park, farmer, Makikihi (Mr S. I. Fitch) appealed on behalf of George Thomas Park, who was the only employee on her farm. The appeal on the grounds of hardship was dismissed, and that of public interest adjourned conditional on the reservist joining the Makikihi Home Guard within 14 days. Duncan Hugh Munro, farmer, Pentland Hills (Mr S. I. Fitch) was similarly dealt with, the reservist to join the Waihaorunga Home Guard. Appeals by W. Ross, farmer, Waituna, on behalf of George Douglas Ross, farmer; by Peter Thomas McRae, sheepfarmer, Waimate; by G. W. Holdsworth, farmer, Morven, on behalf of Ben Holdsworth, farmer, and by J. T. Flynn, farmer, Morven, on behalf of Edward Henry Keen, farm labourer, were dismissed as the appellants did not appear in support of their appeals.
