TEMUKA LOCAL ELECTION

Much Interest Aroused - New Form Of Voting With 15 candidates contesting nine seats for the Borough Council and with two candidates for the Mayoralty, public interest is quickening with the approach of election day on Saturday. Most of the former councillors intimated that they would not seek reelection, but with the exception of Mr Whitehead there is a full muster. Some of the new candidates are youthful members of the community, and although lacking experience in public affairs have business qualifications to recommend them. A change has been made in the manner of marking ballot papers and voters should note that their ballot papers are in danger of being destroyed if not marked correctly. Formerly electors indicated their selection of candidates by striking out the names of those candidates for whom they did not wish to vote. Under the new system, voters are required to indicate their selection by placing a cross opposite the names of those for whom they wish to vote. As far as Temuka voters are concerned they will require to vote for nine councillors or less. If the selection exceeds nine, the voting paper is regarded as Informal or worthless. Polling places will be the Council Chambers, Fire Brigade Station and the Oddfellows Hall and the hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The front page of this issue contains the names of those who are offering themselves for election. BASKETBALL REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION The report of the Temuka and District Basketball Referees’ Association submitted at the annual meeting on Tuesday evening, stated that in spite of a shortage of referees, all games had been efficiently controlled. The association met on several occasions to discuss rules with great benefit to every member. Due to unforeseen circumstances there were no candidates from Temuka for the New Zealand examination in theory. Thanks are extended to senior players who volunteered their services as referees and .it was hoped that they would continue with the work. Thanks were also extended to referees who controlled representative fixtures and to those who had made transport available. Officers elected were: President, Mr R. Armstrong; vice-president, Mrs R.
