RICCARTON NOTES

ASHBURTON PROSPECTS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. The Ashburton County Racing Club should have a good meeting to-morrow. There are some large fields, in which Riccarton stables will provide a big proportion of the competitors. In the hurdle race, Dividend should run well but Sir Frederick appeals even more as he will be a better horse than at Washdyke. Donadea does not stay but the short journey will suit him. Waka has no form. There are some smart hack sprinters in the Eiffelton Handicap. Rawhamai and Lady Derby have done well since they raced at Washdyke, and Lady Derby seems to have made a lot of improvement. Eulogist has come on since Easter. Retrogression shows great speed in his work, but there is doubt about him running on. Guilder is in good order, but she has not had a race this season. Treasurer is an improver. Timaru Cup form looks a good line in the Ashburton Handicap. King’s Toast continues to do good work, so he may again beat Not Out and Prudent Prince, though these three should provide a fine contest. Willie Win is coming on and may be an early prospect. Trench Fight looks well. So does Don’t Forget, but he has no recent staying form. Knight Commander is not consistent and Ferriby does not always repeat track form, while Shikari does not appeal as a stayer. With a very big field in the Trial Stakes, a favourable barrier position will be of value. Hurry Girl is entitled to be favourite, as she has done very well since Washdyke, where her third was a good effort, after starting wide out. Force was unlucky at Washdyke and must be given a chance. Espionage is a promising two-year-old. Arabian Night is another youngster to keep in mind, as he is coming on. Roman Son and Greenbank are a pair worth watching in the Fairfield Hack Handicap, as they can stay. Benevolent is a disappointing racehorse, but his recent track form has been very good. Scarteen has not had a race, for several months. In the Flying Handicap Cymric will nleet some stout opposition. Paper Note has no recent form. Gay Parade is very well and should be hard to beat. Stabilise, with good hack form, can be relied on to make a showing, while Sham Boy has been working well lately. The following may be fancied— Longbeach Hurdles— Sir Frederick, Fundy Bay. Eiffelton Hack— Lady Derby, Eulogist, Irish Lass. Selma Trot— Spencer Volo, Catalpa, Swagger Jack. Ashburton Handicap— King’s Toast, Prudent Prince. Not Out. Trial Stakes— Hurry Girl, Princess Myosotis, Arabian Night. Fairfield Hack— Greenbank, Valcron, Roman Son. Flying Handicap— Airline, Gay Parade, Craiglea. Rakaia Trot—Loyal Friend, Recluse, Mervyn Derby.
