BRITISH SHIPPING
Losses During April LONDON, May 8. It was learnt in London to-night that British shipping losses improved during April, but not to such an extent as was suggested by Senator Vandenberg to the United States Senate, when he said that only eight ships out of 205 leaving for Britain during April had been lost. The April figures will show a total tonnage loss almost as severe as to any previous month, but the figures include losses to the Mediterranean. Separate Atlantic figures, while no doubt interesting to the United States, will not be published as this would give the enemy ’formation to replace the wild guesses he is now forced to make. Service Pool Formed A Merchant Navy service pool is being formed in Great Britain to ensure the quicker turn-round of shipping. Under this scheme officers and seamen. who have left the merchant service since 1936 for other employment, will be allocated to the ships that need them, and will be assured to return of continuity of employment, longer leave with pay, and pay while wilting for ships. Explaining the scheme, the Minister of Snipping and Transport (Lord Leathers) said that there had been complaints of delays in shipping, and, if the Battle of the Atlantic was to be won, these delays must be cut out.
