Free Membership For Returned Men Decision At Annual Meeting All soldiers from the Geraldine district who return from service overseas, are to be made honorary members of the Geraldine Returned Soldiers’ Association for 12 months and will also be supplied with the Association’s badge. This decision was made at the annual meeting of the Geraldine Returned Soldiers’ Association on Thursday night, when it was also agreed that a move be made at the annual conference to have the practice made universal. The president (Dr. L. C. Mail) said the year just past had been made more difficult by war conditions and the Association had been well represented on all committees connected with war work. He had been criticised on a number of occasions, he said, for speaking too straight from the public platform, but what he had said had only been the policy laid down by the Association. / Dr. L. C. Mall was re-elected president and other officers elected were: Vice-president, Mr F. W. Morgan; treasurer, Mr A. A. Readdie; auditor, Mr J. C. Templer; -secretary, Mr F. W. Graybum; executive committee, Messrs J. G. Grierson, J. M. Little, H. A. Robertson, J. M. Polhill, R. G. Charters, J. C. Templer, F. W. Bean, P. G. Withers, A. J. Kennedy, president, secretary, treasurer. The report, previously published, and the balance-sheet which disclosed a credit of £46/8/4, were adopted without discussion. The fact that men were returning from overseas service and being discharged without being given any means of identification as returned men was discussed and it was agreed that a recommendation be made to the conference that the men be Issued with distinguishing badges. WITHDRAWAL OF SCHOOL BUS The withdrawal of the school bus from off the Gapes Valley run is to be made after the term holidays, according to advice received by the Geraldine School Committee from the Canterbury Education Department. At a meeting of the school committee on Thursday evening members expressed regret that this should be done In spite of their representations to the Department. Tributes to the work of the headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan), who has received word of his transfer to Te Aroha, were paid by members when his resignation was received. The chairman (Mr W. H. Kirk) said Mr McGuigan had won the heart of every child In the school. While they were sorry to lose his services, al! members joined in wishing both Mr and Mrs McGuigan every success in Te Aroha. Permission was granted the Geraldine Football Club to use the football ground and to the Waihi Basketball Club to use the basketball court. Mr R. A. Pringle was appointed to the committee In succession to Mr J. D. G. Wllcocks, who has left the district. ' A junior patriotic league comprising senior pupils had been formed and already had done good work, the headmaster reported. Miss M. J. Tempera, infant mlstreis, would leave at the end of the term to take up her new position as Infant mistress at the Temuka District High School. The roll number In the primary department was 226 and there were 85 pupils on the secondary rollHEADMASTER HONOURED Arranged entirely by pupils of the Geraldine District High School a pleasant function took place yesterday afternoon when farewell presentations were made to the headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan), Mrs McGuigan and Miss Elaine McGuigan before their departure for Te Aroha. On behalf of the girls of the school, Joan Wills, a senior prefect, said they were all sorry to lose Mr McGuigan whom they had always found a good friend. They all congratulated Mr McGuigan on hS promotion and wished him every success at Te Aroha. For the boys, Ray Johnson, senior prefect, said Mr McGuigan would make many new friends In his new position, but would not lose the friends he had made at the Geraldine School. Miss Jacqueline McColl then presented a chiming mantel clock to Mr McGuigan and Jean Hansen and an Infant pupil handed a bouquet of chrysanthemums to, Mrs McGuigan. Margaret Mcßeath presented a book to Miss Elaine McGuigan and the singing “For they are Jolly Good Fellows” followed by cheers concluded the function. Mr McGuigan suitably replied. PUPILS AS HOSTESSES Pupils of the Geraldine District High School held an enjoyable end of term social to which ex-pupils and teachers were invited. Miss Joan Wills was hostess and Mr Ray Johnson was master of ceremonies. Dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mr C. Kelland. An extra was played by Mr L. Fifleld and the winners of novelty dancers were Miss N. Collins and R. Lee (lucky spot), Miss L. Morgan and A. Wood (monte carlo), and Miss M. Ellery and C. Small (statue waltz). PERSONAL Miss M. J. Tempero, who has been captain of the Geraldine Ranger Company for the past year, was met by the company and presented with the Queen’s Book of the Red Cross, before her departure for Temuka. Miss Nancy Malster who made the presentation expressed the appreciation of the Guides for the service of Miss Tempero and wished her every success in her new sphere. Mr B. E, Hayman, who has been headmaster of the Fairlie District High School for some years, has been advised of his transfer to Geraldine to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of the Geraldine headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan) to Te Aroha. Resolutions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Messrs J. M. H. Tripp, H. Lovell and E. McSweeney (Winchester) were carried at the annual meeting of the Geraldine Returned Soldiers’ Association on Thursday night. “BEAU GESTE” Based on the famous novel by P. C. Wren, “Beau Geste,” starring Gary Cooper and Ray MUland, will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night at 8 o’clock. It tells of the adventures of three brothers, who come together In stirring adventure in the Foreign Legion. There are excellent supporting features. The proceeds of the dance in the Orari Bridge hall to-night are devoted to _t he Million Pound Appeal. The district nurse sale of work will be held in the Geraldine Parish Hall on Wednesday, May 14. Under the auspices of the National Party Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., Waitomo, will speak to members, supporters and friends at Temuka Parish Hall, May 15, at 8 p.m.; Mayfield Band Hall, May 16 at 8 p.m.; and Geraldine Oddfellows Hal, May 17, at 8 pm. The Geraldine County Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, will hold its annual meeting on Friday, May 30, at 7.45 p.m. in the Geraldine Parish Hall. Mr E.
