GERALDINE LINEN FLAX FACTORY
No Decision Yet Reached Reply From Minister The offer of co-operation in the event of a linen flax factory being established in the Geraldine Borough is acknowledged in a letter the Mayor (Mr D. C. McKechnie) has received from the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan). “I appreciate this offer and if the occasion arises I will avail myself of It.” says Mr Sullivan. The location of a factory at Geraldine was a matter that was engaging the attention of the Linen Flax Management Committee appointed to carry out the details associated with the industry. He would forward information regarding the location of the factory and the direction in which the offer of co-operation could be utilised.
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ♦ASSOCIATION
YEAR’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED There was an increase in the membership from SI to 114 in spite of the fact that several members had left the district, says the annual report of the Geraldine Returned Soldiers’ Association, which will be presented at the annual meeting this evening. There was still room for a considerable increase as there were many returned men who had not yet joined the Association. Nine pension cases had been submitted to the Pensions Board and four pensions were granted, two declined and three were pending. The demands made on the funds had not been as large as in previous years, but an increase in expenditure of this item was likely as the war continued and unfit men returned to civil life. It behoved the Association to build up this fund so that they might be in a position to afford assistance to such cases as required it. A sum of £55/13/7 had been collected on Poppy Day and thanks were due to the women who sold the poppies and the public for their support. The Anzac Day parade was well attended. The reunion was held as in other years. Soldiers were entertained following the public function in the Town Hall. The Association’s policy was to stimulate the interest of the young “Diggers” in the R3.A. with the hope that they will join up with the Association after the war. The backbone of the Home Guard consisted of returned soldiers, the report continued. They were proud of the fact that one of their members, Mr R. G. Charters, M.C., had been appointed Group Commander.
