BORING TESTS

Orepuki Shale Deposits (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 6. The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) said to-day that boring tests for the production of oil from the shale deposits at Orepuki, Southland, are to be undertaken as soon as a drill can be obtained from the Minister’s department. He said that the report on the oil shale deposits had emphasised the fact that there was wide disparity between the maximum and minimum estimates of the deposits at Orepuki and closer estimates were Impossible without trial bores. "Even from the viewpoint of a national emergency,,’ said Mr Sullivan, the value of the Orepuki shale deposits is open to question, but the final decision on whether it should be developed will have to be postponed until the boring programme is completed."
