We have had no racing at Riccarton since the Cup Carnival in November, with only one day anywhere else In Canterbury. Followers of the gallopers are therefore looking forward to another day’s sport on Saturday of next week, when the Canterbury Jockey Club will hold Its summer meeting. The nominations make a heavy list and it seems very safe to predict large fields. As usual at this meeting, most of the competitors will be drawn from local stables, but there Will be a sprinkling of visiting horses, sufficient to give the little extra Interest to the proceedings. The Middle Park Plate should be a keen race. One misses the class represented in the list of previous winners, for this event has been won by some of the best horses of their respective periods, but the 13 who have been left in include material for an excellent contest. Mostly the winners in the past have been two-year-olds, but some good class three-year-olds are included. Doria will be a worthy three-year-old, with Pleading as another possibility. Among the two-year-olds we have Salutation, Monetary and Bird of Prey with good form, while Willow Wood and Divorced are a pair who are likely to improve. So will Palfrey, though he lacks stamina at present. There may in this list be a horse who, in later years, will rank among the good performers: The smallest field of the day will be seen in the Midsummer Handicap, but it may be an Interesting race, as some useful recent form is represented. Wardress made amends at Trentham last week, when she beat a good field over 11 furlongs, for some bad luck earlier in the season. Trench Fight won the Waikoualti Cup, and his stable mate, Cymric, is on the way to good staying form. Not Out has won up to a mile, which may be his best journey in good company, though he may win over longer journeys. Gay Parade has won at a mile and a quarter, but not against strong opposition. Settlement is good enough to win in this company, if only he will show his best. Sovereign Lady is on the down grade, while Winning Rival has no recent form. C. Emerson has gone to Trentham and When he cames back he will bring a new horse, as Mr M. C. Gould, of Palmerston North, has arranged to have Chary trained at Riccarton. Chary, a three-year-old by Inflation, was a smart performer last season, his three successes including the Canterbury Champagne Stakes. Then an accident interfered with his racing and he has had only four starts this season, including two at Trentham last week. He looked a good sort when he Won here last Easter.

Kindergarten’s Record As there is just a possibility that Kindergarten has run his last race in New Zealand, a survey of his record is opportune. A chestnut colt by Kincardine from Valadore, bred by Mr E. N. Fitzgerald in Poverty Bay, Kindergarten has contested 14 races, the result being eight firsts, two seconds and one third, and £5005 in stakes and trophy. Trained at Gisborne by Ivan Tinsley, he commenced his racing career by two inconspicuous performances at Avondale. At his next appearance Kindergarten easily accounted for a weak field In the Hastings Stakes. On his home track at Makaraka, the colt had two bloodless victories in poor juvenile company, and he was unplaced in a two-year-old handicap at Ohinemuii. His total earnings for the season were £265, and apart from his nice style of moving there was nothing in his appearance or form to indicate future greatness. Certainly none of those who are now

extolling his merits had discerned his possibilities, and he was still “just a country hack” when he opened his three-year-old career with two thirds at Avondale. He did better at Ellerslie by finishing second in a hack handicap and by winning on the following day. This put him out of the Poverty Bay class, and his owner decided to leave him at Takanini with R. S. Bagby. Since then Kindergarten has been undefeated, the Alison Cup, Christmas Handicap, Great Northern Derby, and Wellington Cup having fallen to him in turn. The colt has not tackled weight-for-age company and until he has beaten Beau Vite and Co. it will be premature to attempt to grade him. At this juncture, assertions that he is better than Gloaming border on the ridiculous. .
