NEW SCHOLARSHIPS

Commerce and Dentistry

By Telegraph—-Press Association AUCKLAND, January 20.

Two new travelling scholarships in commerce and in dentistry were provided by the Senate of the University of New Zealand in its sessions to-day. Both of these were made possible by the renewal of the Government’s grant to the University finances. Both scholarships will be of an annual value of £250, the commerce scholarship being offered every second year and being tenable only by a Master of Commerce with first class honours of not more than three years standing. In the case of the dental scholarship the holder shall proceed within 15 months of the award to some recognised school or schools in Europe or America.

A number of alterations were made concerning the examinations for Bachelor and Master of Arts and honours. These still have to be finally approved and will not come into force until next year.

The proposed change in the award of the MacMillan, Brown and Habens essay prizes resulted in these being made available every two years instead of every three years as at present. Sir Thomas Hunter was reappointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand for a further term of three years.
