Improvements At BayTributes By Visitors At the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night, the Deputy Mayor Cr. P. B. Foote, chairman of the Reserves Committee, said that during the holidays appreciative references of the improvements effected at Caroline Bay had been so numerous that it was difficult to remember them all. One man had said: “I have come all the way from Napier to enjoy Caroline Bay. Napier would give all it has got for half your bay.” Mr Foote expressed appreciation of the work of the staff during the holiday period. More than 1500 cars had been parked at the Bay on New Year’s Day, but all the arrangements had been carried out without a hitch. No Wanton Damage “Chiefly, I want to congratulate the public, both visiting and local, on the fact that no wanton damage was done during the holiday period. There was a considerable amount of wear and tear. Which was to be expected. The public were to be congratulated on the manner in which they had looked after their property. The Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, said that when in Wellington last week, complimentary references to the improvements to the Bay had been made to him. These were a definite indication that they had been worth while and that they were of definite value to the town. Finance Committee The Finance Committee reported, inter alia, as follows: — Fire Preventon Equipment: Memorandum to be placed before the Emergency Precautions Committee was received. Home Guard Expenditure: Resolved to recommend that the expenditure in connection with the instruction camp be met on this occasion only. Levels County, voting qualifications: Resolved to recommend that the Mayor be nominated. Tenders for cyclostyling District Electors’ List. Quotations were received for 150 copies, as follows: Armstrong and Springhall 12/11; P. Lamb 13/2 a double page. As there was only a difference of less than £1 on the total cost of the work it was resolved to recommend that P. Lamb’s tender at 13/2 a double page be accepted. Photographs on Bay and streets: Resolved that the action of the Town Clerk in issuing a licence to Mr S. Baldwin (Christchurch), be approved; and that the recommendation regarding the licensing of photographers in general be referred to the incoming Council. The report was adopted. Works Committee The Works Committee reported, as follows: Appointment of Assistant Traffic Inspector: Resolved that an assistant be appointed for the period of Inspector Cameron's leave. Resolved that Inspector C. Newcome’s car allowance be not paid during his illness. Sanitary Department: Impounding dogs. Resolved that the work of providing accommodation for Impounding dogs found loose at Caroline Bav be done. Dog Registration: Resolved that the inspector be Instructed to make an intensive search for unregistered dogs. Pie Cart: Resolved that application for a licence be declined. Borough Engineer’s Department: Scale of charges making good asphalt footways, etc. due to building operations. Resolved that the charges be agreed to. South End Ratepayers’ Association: Report of Borough Engineer was received. Corner Park Avenue and King Street: Resolved that a footpath be formed. Southern approach to Caroline Bay: Resolved that the Association be Informed that the matter is in hand. Supply of Chaff: Resolved that tenders be called and that the samples be approved by Cr. Kinsman. Pig rails at Abattoir: Resolved that the matter be deferred In the meantime. Airport Runways: Referred to the next meeting of the committee. Disposal of Sawdust: Resolved that the disposal as recommended by the Engineer be given a trial, and that he should report again in six months’ time. Report of Abattoir manager received, and noted with great satisfaction that out of the large number of stock slaughtered only three were found to be diseased and were condemned. Fencing at Abattoir: Resolved that the work be done and that tenders be called for one ton of wire. Military Camp, Seventh Works Field Coy., N.Z. Engineers: Resolved to recommend that during Mr Gilmore’s absence in camp that the difference between the military pay and his own salary be made up. The report was adopted. The meeting was attended by the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, who presided, and Crs. P. B. Foote, J. R. Hart, W. H. Hall, H. J. Mathers, F. B Hawkey, J. S. Satterthwaite, M. H. Richards and A. S. Kinsman

YACHTING

CORNWELL CUP By Telegraph—Press Association WANGANUI, January 20. The annual contests for the Cornwell Cup were commenced on the Wanganui River to-day. The first race resulted in a win for the Wanganui crew, the holders, who beat Christchurch by one minute. Manukau was third and Plimmerton fourth. A further race held this afternoon was won by Christchurch, with Plimmerton second and Paremata third. Two minutes separated the first and second boats. In the first race each crew sailed its own boat and for the second the draw became automatic.

INTER-PORT CHAMPIONSHIP

The inter-port championship yacht race contested by Cornwell Cup crews from Wanganui and New Plymouth this afternoon over a six miles course in ideal weather and a freshening breeze resulted:—Alnha (Wanganui) 1, Valeta 'Wanganui) 2, Pioneer (New Plymouth) 3.
