FAITH IN BRITISH VICTORY

Willkie’s Mission To London

Aid Bill Will Be “Adopted Easily”

By Telegraph—. Press Association—Copyright (Rec. January 20, 8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 19. “I want to get the viewpoint of the people in the bomb shelters and all walks of life. I want to get their ideas on what kind of government Britain will have after she wins the war. I refuse to consider any other possible end to the struggle than a British victory,” said Mr Wendell Willkie, discussing his trip to Britain. He added that he believed Mr Roosevelt’s lend and lease bill would be adopted easily after a reasonable debate.

Mr Roosevelt conferred with Mr Willkie and Mr Cordell Hull. The President handed Mr Willkie a personal note for Mr Churchill. As Mr Willkie left he carried Mr Roosevelt’s note in his hand. He said he was unable to disclose the contents. “It is a pleasant personal note, not a formal introduction.” It was addressed “Dear Churchill.” Another envelope was inscribed “to a certain naval person by kindness of W. Willkie.”

Mr Willkie, addressing the Women’s Republican Club, again voiced .approval of the Lend and Lease Bill. He said: “If the Republican Party in 1941 make blind opposition to this Bill and allows itself to be presented as an isolationist party, it will never again gain control of the Government. I beg with you and plead with you. Do not in blind opposition because of your hate of an individual, forget the world situation confronting us.”
