WOMAN’S PROMPT ACTION

Man Rescued From Burning Truck By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, January 20. Only the prompt .action of a woman in coming to his assistance saved John Barry, of Elgin Street, Waikiwi, from serious injury when the motor-truck he was driving left the road at Otatara on Saturday night and overturned into a gravel pit, where it burst into flames. Apparently unable to extricate himself from the upturned vehicle, Barry called for help, and his cries were heard by Mrs Janet Mildred Orlowski, who occupied a crib nearby. She was able to pull him from the burning vehicle and a moment later the petrol tank exploded. It is understood that the truck failed to negotiate a turn in the road. It is a total wreck. The accident occurred about 10 o’clock, Barry, a single man, aged 62, who is employed at the pit, was admitted to the Southland Hospital suffering from severe burns to the back and left leg. One arm was also badly burned and there were slight burns on the other. His condition last night was reported to be quite satisfactory.
