Fighters Reduce Scale Of Attack By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 19, 11.3 p.m.) LONDON, January 18 Swansea was the main objective of last night's raids. The attack started soon after dark and lasted until the early morning. The usual procedure was followed, fire-bombs being dropped and then explosives. A number of persons were trapped when a heavy calibre bomb crashed on houses and shops ffi south-western end of the town.. A woman and two babies were killed. Those trapped were later rescued. A threatened large scale attack of the west country petered out in the face of the heaviest gunfire heard in this area. British night fighters harassed enemy raiders in both South Wales and the west country. It is believed that they broke up a big formation and considerably reduced the scale of the attack on Swansea. Five bombs fell in a residential district on the outskirts of London to-day. Children playing in a street near where one was whistling down threw themselves on the ground and afterwards resumed

playing. A bomber flew over the east coast this morning and machinegunned a train. The Rome radio announced that the latest Luftwaffe casualty list contains 4006 names. The killed totalled 1700. the wounded 1357 and the missing 850.
