TEMUKA GARDEN PARTY

Salvation Army Home Building Renovated „,^ n , ce Salvation Army is desirous °f bringing the public into closer touch with its work, a garden party was held at the Bramwell Booth Boys’ Home, lemuka, on Saturday and was attended by a representative number of citizens. ™h e home, which was recently renovated at a cost of about £6OO, provides for 56 boys. The dormitories, cloakrooms, bathrooms were spick and span and nicely decorated and furnished. •The grounds formed an attractive picwas enhanced by a display of bright bunting. The Municipal Band under the baton of Mr v. Thomas played many tuneful numbers in the course of the afternoon. The boys gave a display of drill, which was neatly executed and their singing was warmly appreciated. Lieut.-Commissioner Smith extended a welcome to the visitors and said that if afforded him satisfaction to see the Improvements which had been made in the Home by the renovations, and he acknowledged the great work done by Major and Mrs Chard. Adjutant and Mrs Angus, who had been recently appointed to manage the institution, were the right people in the right place, and it was a tribute to the work of the institution that Adjutant Angus, who had been brought up in the Home, was now the manager of it. Outlining the work of the institution the Commissioner said it was their aim to develop not only the physical side of the boys, but, more important, the spiritual side of their natures. He reminded the boys that the most valuable things were the things they could not see; without nobility of character life was empty. The Commissioner trusted that the work of the Home had contributed something to the well-being of Temuka and he thanked the citizens for their Support. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) expressed the town’s appreciation of the work of the Home, and said that he was glad that the Salvation Army was operating in Temuka. He paid a tribute to Adjutant and Mrs Angus for the able manner in which they had carried out their duties. He hoped that the boys would become worthy citizens and worthy products of their training. Any position was within their reach, and they had only to live up to the ideals which were constantly before them in their present life. The story deals with the swift rise to fame of an Irish salesgirl in New York City. Her resourcefulness as a : dress model for a fashionable shop ■ leads to the shop’s sponsoring her social ; appearance in the guise of a debutante, but in reality to serve as a walking , advertisement for gowns. How the ■ scheme gets her into plenty of hot ■ water as well as into a double roman- ■ tic complication with two wealthy 1 young men, makes for the delightful 1 ending of the picture. '
