FAIRLIE TEKAPO SCHEME

Plant And Material Increased Volume With the work of erecting accommodation and administration buildings at Tekapo well forward a start will probably be made soon on the major construction work of the Tekapo hydro scheme. During the last few months the preliminary work has been pushed ahead quietly, but in the New Year the number of men on the job will be increased considerably. Already the quantity of plant and materials which has passed through Fairlie is considerable, and the volume will increase steadily as the work progresses. Poles to carry the transmission wires have been unloaded at Fairlie and other stations lower down, and these are being distributed along the route which the mains will follow. HOLIDAY WEATHER Extremely warm weather was experienced in Fairlie over the week-end and on Saturday and Sunday there was a constant stream of traffic to favourite picnic spots at the river. On both days the sun shone from a cloudless sky, and visitors were provided with the best holiday weather so far this season. The maximum temperature in the shade on Saturday was 83 degrees and on Sunday the thermometer reached 89 degrees in the shade. Yesterday was overcast and cool. NEW YEAR BALL The St. Stephen’s Women’s Guild which has run the New Year dance for a number of years will stage another popular function in the Aorangi Hall to-night. All the usual novelties are to be included on the programme, and there is every indication that the usual success will attend the ball. COMING OF AGE PARTY A large number of friends of Mr and Mrs D. Ross gathered in the Kim bell School on the occasion of their son Donald’s twenty-first birthday. Mr and Mrs Ross were piped into the hall by Messrs G. Cowan and H. Cogar. Highland dances were contributed by MayCowan and Fawn McKellar. On behalf of those present Mr T. B. Crampton congratulated Donald on the attainment of his majority, and thanked Mr and Mrs Ross for giving such a splendid party. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing for which Messrs A. Cowan and H. Gillum were M.C’s. NEW YEAR SCREENINGS “Dark Victory,” the Warner Bros, picture which will be screened to-night at the De Luxe Theatre, Fairlie, at 8.30, presents Bette Davis as the illstarred heroine of one of the tenderest, one of the most poignantly beautiful romances ever unfolded upon the screen. Other members of the cast are George Brent, Humphrey Bogart and Geraldine Fitzgerald, who has the second feminine role although this is her first American picture. A variety supporting programme will also be screened. The incomparable trio of western players, William Boyd, George Hayes and Russell Hayden again head the cast of the latest “Hopalong” Cassidy action film, “Sunset Trail/’ which will be screened in a double feature programme at Fairlie to-morrow at 8.15. The second picture is “Disbarred,” a startling expose of a section of America’s legal profession.
