BRILLIANT EXPLOIT
Greek Submarine Sinks Three Ships By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, December 30 The exploits of the Greek submarine Papanicolls, which sank three Italian supply ships on Christmas Eve, are described in an Athens communique. The Papanicolls was on patrol, submerged, off Valona and in the Straits of Otranto, when she sighted a convoy heading for Valona. The largest was a vessels of 15,000 tons. Six destroyers were on guard.
Sighting carefully, the Papanicolls fired four torpedoes, and heard three explosions. She managed to elude depth charges released by the destroyers and aircraft from the shore, and when she surfaced five hours later found that a strong current had carried her up to the Dalmation coast. Off Valona once more, the submarine was again hunted by destroyers and aircraft throughout Christmas Day. On Friday she reached an lonian Islands base in safety, to hear confirmation of the fact that three ships had gone to the bottom from her torpedoes. _ .
