BONUS DIVERTED
AMOUNT INVESTED IN SAVINGS SCHEME By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, December 19. The Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, announced to-day that he had received a letter from the chairman of directors of a prominent firm operating in New Zealand stating that it had been the firm’s custom in the past to present at Christmas each year a gift as an expression of the directors’ thanks and appreciation of the services rendered by the members of the staff. This year the directors realised that to win the war meant a call to all for personal sacrifice and, accordingly, had decided to open a national savings account, paying as a gift the initial deposit of 5/-. Referring to this gesture, the Minister said it needed no comment from him to emphasise the patriotic spirit which moved the directors and the house committee to place the country’s needs before that of the individual. He would like on behalf of the Government to make public acknowledgment of this splendid gesture which was evidence of the rapidly growing appreciation of the need for the sacrifice which would be necessary for the Empire’s ultimate triumph over the forces of aggression.
