Unden, in a speech on the tripartite pact, said: “The new order does not appeal to Sweden. It would mean that small nations would be placed in an indicated space, in which they would lose their independence and their industry would be directed to suit the great Power controlling that space. “The subjugation and stifling of free peoples is never justified by claiming that it is necessary in the interest of a great Power. A durable peace cannot be secured by the partition of the world and making small nations pauper Inmates of a great Power’s lebensraum. Germany’s desire to obtain a base for operations against Britain would certainly cause a Norwegian conflict.
