RESERVIST FAILS TO REGISTER
Term Of Imprisonment By Telegraph—Press Association HAMILTON, December 19. Imprisonment for 14 days was imposed by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., on John Robert Hamerton, a fibrous plasterer, on a charge of failing to register for military service as required under the regulations. Hamerton, who pleaded not guilty conducted his own defence, which was based on religious beliefs. When the accused digressed on his attitude to the war, the Magistrate remarked that he was not concerned with a political address. Mr Paterson said he would inflict only a moderate penalty if the accused was prepared to apply for his reserve certificate immediately. Hamerton refused, saying that to make application would be contrary to his belief. “I suppose you want to be a martyr,” said the Magistrate in sentencing Hamerton.
His employers, Gall and Bell, were charged with employing Hamerton contrary to the regulations. They explained that they had taken all reasonable precautions, and when they discovered Hamerton was to be charged, had immediately dismissed him.
