New Year Tournament Leading Players Enter “I think our annual tournament has now reached a stage, which makes it the most popular in the South Island,” said the president (Mr J. S. Satterthwaite) at a meeting of the management committee of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening. There was every indication that the New Year tournament would be most successful, and a representative attendance of leading players from all over the South Island, including all last year’s winners, was assured. He made an appeal to South Canterbury players to support the tournament and help to keep the game strongly established in the district through the present difficult times. Referring to the holding of the New Zealand junior championships at Wilding Park at the end of January, Mr Satterthwaite said that the Association had decided to send to the tournament the South Canterbury junior champions, provided that they were affiliated to clubs and reached the requisite standard. He expressed a hope that junior players would support the local championships, as there were many of them who were worthy to play in the Dominion tournament. Quadrangular Tournament The suggestion put forward by the South Canterbury Association for the holding of a quadrangular tournament between the South Canterbury, North Otago, Otago and Southland Associations in Dunedin in February, 1941, had received a good response from the other Associations, although nothing definite had yet been received from Otago, Mr Satterthwaite went on. Should the tournament take place it would prove a highlight in interprovincial tennis as at no previous time had four Associations got together to hold a tournament. The secretary (Mr P. W. Young) reported that all arrangements for the New Year tournament were in hand. Ranking List Men: W. E. Renton, F. G. Lewis, S. McWhirter, G. Innes-Jones, J. C. McKay, R. Barclay, J. S.
