PRIMARY SCHOOL

Chairman Presents Awards Advice To Children "The greeting which a British warship displayed when in New Zealand waters recently was ‘Well done Achilles’,” said the Rev. L. A. Barnes when addressing the children of the primary department of the Temuka District High School yesterday at the break-up ceremony. “It was to be hoped that ‘well done’ was written on all reports.’’ His conviction was that everyone could merit these words. It was not an impossible ideal to ask people to be gentlemen. Every one had a duty the nature of which was to some extent determined by their education, talents and upbringing. The word "duty” was a recurring expression in English life which had been commented on by foreign observers. Doing one's duty was doing what one ought to do no matter what the cost. Mr Barnes urged the children to be triers, workers and not dodgers; kindly and considerate; put God first, others second and self last. In extending a welcome to parents and friends and for the absence of the Mayor and Mayoress, who were out of town, the chairman of the school committee (Mr A. E. Smith>, urged those who had completed their primary education to continue at the High School. The curriculum had been considerably widened, and the range of subjects would bear comparison with those of the best high schools. A display of school work was greatly appreciated by visitors who praised the high standard of the exhibits.
