AUCKLAND R.C.

HANDICAPS The following weights for the minor events on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting, have been declared: — GRAFTON HURDLES

STRATFORD R.C. HANDICAPS The following handicaps for the first day of the Stratford Racing Club’s meeting on January 1 have been declared:—

If, as is hoped, Royal Chief, Beau Vite and Old Bill all go to the post in the Auckland Cup there will be a fine “top” for the race, and it is necessary to go back 10 years to find a stronger one. In the 1930 Auckland Cup, the starters included Nightmarch, Star Stranger, Concentrate, and Gay Crest.

Backers who supported Peony Rose on the place machine in the Southland Cup, run on the King's Birthday, were unwittingly deprived of a fifth of the rightful dividend returned by the Robespierre mare. Peony Rose, who ran second to Mona’s Song, was the outsider in a field of five. She carried 350 tickets <lO/- units) in the place pool, and should have paid for each £1 invested 10/6 more than the dividend which was paid out. A mistake in the computation of the dividend was made by the totalisator staff, but this was not noticed until it was too late to have the matter adjusted, and the surplus pool, about £lOO, was impounded. Cases of wrong dividends are rare, although it is on record that a similar mistake to that in the Peony Rose case was made on a Southland course a few years ago. In the present case both the Racing Conference and the Government Audit Department were immediately advised of the error. The club has nothing whatever to do with the disposal of the surplus. It is understood, in this case, that the money will probably be handed over by the Government to charity or to the patriotic funds.
