PARKING ON BAY

No Concession To Motorists Council’s Decision No action is to be taken by the Borough Council concerning the request from the Automobile Association ( South | Canterbury) that concession tickets for j parking cars on Caroline Bay should be granted to motorists. The decision was made on the recommendation of the Reserves Committee, which reported to a meeting of the Council last night that, according to a statement made by the Town Clerk, season tickets at 10/- were allotted to motorists, provided a season bathing ticket was also taken out. Although the concession had been in force for two years, only one person had taken advantage of it. King Street Bus Service Cr. F. B. Hawkey urged that the 8.45 а. King Street omnibus service should be reinstated, and said that the residents of the area should be provided with a means of getting to their work. He claimed that the service should pay during the coming holiday period. Cr. M. H. Richards moved that the matter be referred back to the engineer for a report. The Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) said that the question had been thoroughly investigated and a decision to discontinue the service had been delayed on the representations of Cr. Hawkey to see if any improvement resulted. No improvement had occurred, and the recommendation of the engineer that the service be discontinued was adopted by the Council. The motion was defeated. Library Committee The librarian (Miss A. K. Elliot) reported as follows for the month ended October 21: Lending Departments: Total book issues amount to 23,560 for both Departments—an increase of 2929 on the issues of October, 1939. Issues to the adult lending 18.015 (15,719) show an increase in every section—fine arts being most outstanding with 100 extra issues. This shows that an interest is being taken in the music section of which there are now 100 scores for cilculation. The books on gardening were moved from the end of the room, and are now much easier of access making a noticeable increase to the popularity of these books. Non-fiction has the larger number of additions this month as 22 books have been added—the total being 397. Twenty-eight reference books have been added to this department, the outstanding being “A History of Printing in New Zealand.” Fines, sales and subscriptions amounted to £3O/4/3 (£25/11/7), while 80 new borrowers have been added to the roll. Juvenile Department: Issues for the month are 3616 fiction with 1929 nonfiction. The total issues are 5545 as against 4992 of last October. Rural school children are joining slowly and as the scheme is better known more use will be made of the privilege. Forty have joined to date. Books for Soldiers: Fifteen cases and cartons were dispatched to Christchurch for distribution. At least 300 volumes await dispatch to the local hospital. The report was adopted. Reserves Committee The Reserves Committee reported: Century Baths: A request from the South End Swimming Club to use the Baths on Wednesday evenings from б. p.m. for the purpose of holding club races was granted. The club complimented the Council on the improved state of the baths resulting from the additions made. Rock Wall. Evans Street: A letter was received from the Timaru Beautifying Society stating that the erection of lamps on the wall would add to the ornamental appearance, although the Society does not expect the Council to utilise these at present, and stating that the Society would be willing to bear to some extent maintenance costs. The Curator stated that the standards and lamps were already on the Bay being surplus to the requirements. and that all that would be entailed would be labour in erecting them. Aorangi Croquet Club: A request was considered to have the front of the pavilion fenced off so that children would be prevented from making a playground of it. The Curator stated that he thought this was a good idea, and that there would be practically only labour entailed, and it is recommended that the work be done. The report was approved. The meeting was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy), Crs. J. S. Satterthwaite, W. H. Hall, H. J. Mathers. P. B. Foote, F. B. Hawkey and M. H. Richards.
