LATE CABLE NEWS

NAZI PRESSURE ON JAPAN Southward Thrust Wanted By 'Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received November 27, 2.10 a.m.) SHANGHAI, November 26 It is rumoured that Herr Stahmers is en route to the Far East to renew pressure on Tokio for a resumption of the southward thrust. Simultaneously Germans at Chungking are reported to have intensified their efforts to persuade Marshal Chaing Kai-Shek that the democracies are unable to save the Chungking Government for which reason he should accept an honourable peace with Japan and afterwards co-operate with Japan. The southward drive is aimed at Singapore and the Dutch Indies in an effort to dismember the British Empire. It is reliably stated that a group of prominent American businessmen at Shanghai have drafted a message to the State Department urging a credit of 200,000,000 dollars to Chungking immediately and other assurances of the utmost American aid in an effort to offset German pressure on Chungking. A message from Tokio states that Admiral Kiyoshl Hasegewa has been appointed Governor-General of Formosa replacing Mr Seizzo Kobayashi. Admiral Hasegewa is the first active admiral assigned to Formosa since 1918 for which commentators are attaching importance in connection with Japan’s southward policy.
