SAILORS’ REST

THE YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED In the annual report of the Sailors’ Rest for the year, the Timaru branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union expresses thanks to alt who have helped financially and materially. “Once again,” it is stated, “the report is made while the Empire is under the shadow of war. and the arrival of overseas steamers has been very uncertain. The soldiers and airmen in training are still being entertained on Sundays at the Rest, and when a ship is in port during the week-end the sailors have an opportunity of meeting with men, who, like themselves, are prepared to risk all for their King and Empire. Social evenings have been arranged whenever possible. Thirtysix overseas steamers have visited the port during the year. 720 visitors paving about 2160 visits. Mr and Mrs Woodward continue to carry out their duties in their usual efficient and helpful manner. Sailors in hospital are visited regularly and supplied with fruit and reading material. “Gifts consisting of comfort bags, hold-alls, soc'rs, scarves, etc., received from branches of the W.C.T.U. throughout the Dominion w’ere given to seamen visiting the port at Christmas time. “Thanks are due to the many business firms and friends who have contributed to the funds, to the honorary auditor. Mr A. C. Martin, and to all who have sent in books and magazines. “The following is the list of donors for the year:—Timaru Harbour Board. Timaru Borough Council. Timaru Gas Co.. Timaru Milling Co., Timarj Yacht Club, W. Evans and Co.. D. C. Turnbull. Canterbury Farmers’ Co-on. Assn., R. Wilson and Co.. John Edmond Westport Coal Co.. Linton Coal Co.. Mr G. T. Dawson. Mrs MacDonald. Miss Kirk ( Wellington), Mr and Mrs Woodward, Miss Cumming. S.C. Federation of Women’s Institutes, the Dunedin, Napier, Te Awamutu. Riccarton, Masterton, Feildlng, Tinwald, Ashburton. Opotiki, Karorl, Tua Marina, Rakaia, Tauranga and Timaru branches of the W.C.T.U., and the Timaru North L.T.L.”
